Pickles on a burger: a must-have or a no-go?

August 6, 2025

Burgers, with or without pickles? This debate is on the same level as the one about potato omelets with or without onions, and pizza with or without pineapple.

It's a well-known fact that great philosophers have been debating an essential, pivotal, and transcendent question for centuries.

And it's not some trivial matter like whether reality exists independently of the observer or if the observer's preconceived ideas shape their reality—that's a bore. This is much more important and profound:

Burgers, with or without pickles? This debate is on the same level as the one about potato omelets with or without onions, and pizza with or without pineapple.

Leaving aside the fact that the issues that divide humanity are based on a "with" or a "without," today we're going to add our two cents to the pickle problem in burgers.

Not to give an absolute answer, as we doubt the living have access to such knowledge, but at least to present the reasons for and against this controversial culinary combination.

What do pickles add to burgers?

Before you raise the flag for team "Add all the pickles you can" or team "Pickles are for goats," let's lay our cards on the table: why did anyone ever decide to put a pickle inside a burger?

The reason is that the sour taste of the pickle counteracts the richness of the meat, the sweetness of the bun, and the creaminess of the cheese. It also adds texture.

While most of the ingredients in a burger are soft and smooth, the pickle provides a crunchy surprise, like the figurine in a King's Cake, but without the risk of breaking your teeth.

Finally, we must talk about the aroma: that vinegary tang activates your sense of smell, making your mouth water if you're on team pickle, or putting you in survival mode if you're an anti-pickler.

For all these reasons, the pickle in a burger is an ingredient with a purpose in life, unlike chia seeds.

Those who are pro-pickle

Pickle defenders are clear: without a pickle, the burger is incomplete.

For them, every bite should have the exact balance of sweet, savory, and sour. And there, ladies and gentlemen, the pickle wins the medal for gustatory merit.

Additionally, the pickle has that je ne sais quoi that turns a good burger into a food with personality. It's like when someone wears brightly colored socks: it may not be necessary, but it certainly makes a difference.

And let's be honest: when everything in life tends to be flat, homogeneous, and without surprises, don't you appreciate a small, unexpected detail?

Those who are anti-pickle

On the opposite side of the table, anti-picklers also come with arguments (and perhaps traumas).

For them, the pickle is an infiltrator with a flavor that is too intense to contribute anything; it invades, takes over, and overshadows everything. It's that person who crashed the party and does nothing but annoy everyone else.

And let's not forget the surprise factor. The pickle is usually camouflaged, lurking between buns, meat, and cheese slices, waiting for its moment to pounce on your palate and sour the experience.

Ultimately, pickle haters are all about what they know: burgers, like life, are better without surprises.

And you, which side are you on?

The only thing that's clear is that the pickle leaves no one indifferent. It's the reggaeton of toppings: you either dance to it or you get out of the venue, no two ways about it.

As we said before, there is no right answer (and that's what's fascinating). There are only personal preferences, eternal debates, and suspicious looks whenever someone orders burgers for a group without asking.

Luckily, at Hideout Burger, we don't judge anyone. In this "hideout," there's a place for everyone, except for those who put pineapple on pizza (because we don't make pizzas, not for any other reason, ahem...). Because if there's one thing that unites all people, besides hunger and free Wi-Fi, it's the love for a good burger, no matter what's on it.
